When Andy Cohen, the Bravo TV personality and “Real Housewives” maestro, became a new father last month, he did what most proud parents do: He shared photos of his newborn on Instagram.

“This is my son, Benjamin Allen Cohen,” Mr. Cohen posted to his three million followers, along with a black-and-white photograph of his baby in a hospital beanie nestled up against his bare chest. “He is 9 lbs 2 ounces!! 20 inches!!”

The photo garnered more than one million likes; commenters gushed over Benjamin’s size and full head of dark hair. “Many many mazels,” one wrote. But the oohing and ahhing were soon interrupted by a bitter streak of unsolicited advice and judge-y critiques.

“This baby is not even a month old. He has no control of his neck. Thus in that carrier he can suffocate himself,” a commenter wrote on a photo of Mr. Cohen aboard a private plane, with his son strapped to him in a baby carrier. A photo of Mr. Cohen’s dog sniffing Benjamin’s nose spurred warnings about germs and bites.

Even a visit from Anderson Cooper to the light-filled nursery in the West Village of Manhattan was cause for concern. “Why is Uncle Anderson wearing his NYC sneakers on the carpet that Benny will eventually crawl on?!” wrote a commenter.

The dad shaming was not limited to social media. Page Six, the New York Post gossip column, ran an item saying that Mr. Cohen had been “spotted on dating apps after welcoming baby" — meaning Scruff and Grindr.

While being judged is a rite of passage for all new parents, up there with the sleepless nights and dirty diapers, Mr. Cohen seems to have attracted more than his fair share of sniping. That’s partly because of his high-profile role as the gossipy host of Bravo’s late-night talk show, “Watch What Happens Live,” and his presence on social media.

But much of the criticism also stems from Mr. Cohen’s status as a single gay father, and how it subverts preconceptions about parenting and gender stereotypes.

“People do not think that men can parent,” said Marshall Forstein, the interim chair of the department of psychiatry at the Cambridge Health Alliance, and an associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Forstein, a father of two, adopted his first child more than three decades ago with his husband, who is no longer alive. “There is an association of homosexuality with deviant culture.”

Mr. Cohen declined to comment for this article, but he has not been shy about addressing his critics. During an interview on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM radio show last month, he shot back at the naysayers who chastised him for taking his newborn son aboard an airplane. “You don’t think I checked with three pediatricians before?” Mr. Cohen said, using profanity to punctuate his point.

(Also, the critics may not realize that New York State does not allow for paid surrogacy arrangements, so would-be parents like Mr. Cohen go out of state — in his case, California — to find a surrogate. How else would Mr. Cohen take home his son?)

Mr. Cohen has also replied directly to his Instagram critics. After someone chided him for taking Benjamin “out into the world too soon” (on a photo of Mr. Cohen going for a dog walk with his son), Mr. Cohen wrote back: “My pediatrician told me to take him out. And this was Friday when it was 55 degrees. What else you got?”

Jess Cagle, the departing editor of People magazine, which featured Mr. Cohen and Benjamin on the cover last month, said that Mr. Cohen’s public persona as a sassy partyer could be fueling the back talk.

“This is a single gay dad, who has cultivated this reputation as a swinging bachelor, suddenly, to the world’s eyes, becoming a father,” said Mr. Cagle, who is a longtime friend of Mr. Cohen’s.

While the response to the article was positive, Mr. Cagle said that some readers were not aware of Mr. Cohen’s professional and serious side. “They’re like, ‘Oh my gosh, you are the guy who goes out every night. How could you possibly be a parent?’ It doesn’t necessarily all come from a bad place. They just think he needs advice.”

Some gay fathers say they often get unsolicited advice from strangers, based on the outdated misconception that only mothers know best.

“As gay parents, my husband and I have been in numerous situations where we are not only corrected — but also compared to a higher ‘mom’ standard,” Ariel Foxman, the former editor of InStyle magazine, wrote in an essay for O: The Oprah Magazine called “Dear Internet, Please Stop Dad-Shaming Andy Cohen.” He recalled one incident when a “momsplainer” smiled at him and yelled, “That boy needs his gloves.”

“When there’s not a female presence involved, it happens a lot,” said Eric Rosswood, the author of “The Ultimate Guide for Gay Dads,” a how-to book for L.G.B.T. parents. Mr. Rosswood, who lives in Westchester County, N.Y., said a stranger in an elevator once corrected the way he was burping his son, and a receptionist once told him that his newborn daughter could suffocate in a baby carrier.

While the advice may be well intentioned, the “mother knows best” attitude may ultimately be counterproductive, said Alexandra Sacks, a reproductive psychiatrist and an author of “What No One Tells You: A Guide to Your Emotions From Pregnancy to Motherhood.” “It reinforces the position that women have been trying to get out of, which is being told to stay at the home and not be treated as equals in society,” Dr. Sacks said.

A few weeks into fatherhood, Mr. Cohen seems to be taking the criticism in stride. In a series of Instagram videos last month, he tried to reassure critics who were upset that his dog, Wacha, had destroyed his son’s stuffed Torah toy. Was Wacha jealous of Benny? Was his new family falling apart?

“It’s not that deep. Stand down. Everything is fine in the West Village,” Mr. Cohen said. “Sometimes a Torah toy is just a Torah toy, everybody.”
